Emily Sheets, 3rd grade teacher at Wilson Elementary, was recognized by superintendent Rick Nielsen this week at the Nebo School District board meeting as our school's teacher of the year. How blessed we are to have such an amazing teacher, colleague, and friend! Way to go, Miss Sheets!
Our Reading Round-Up is tomorrow, Thursday April 14th, from 5:00-7:00pm, and we couldn't be more excited! There will be make-and-take activities to help your child improve their reading, and the book fair will be open (it's buy one get one free!). Each child who comes to the Reading Round-Up will get to enter a drawing for their class for a gift basket (parents must accompany their students at this event), and parents will get tickets as they do activities to enter a drawing for family gift baskets (9) each worth $100!
On Monday, students from Rees Elementary in Spanish Fork started our first day back from Spring Break with a fun performance! A group of 4th, 5th, and 6th graders at Rees have come together to form RAD (Rees African Dummers), where they practice and perform traditional African and Carribean music using drums, steel drums, and other traditional instruments. With their upbeat music, smiles, dancing, and interesting rhythms, it was a great experience to watch and hear them and to see the fun they had while doing it. Thank you, RAD, for coming to perform for us!
Saint Patrick's Day
The day of the Festival of Patrick is a cultural and religious celebration held on March 17, the tradtional death date of St. Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland.
St. Patrick's Day was made an official Christian feast day in the 17th century. The celebrations generally involved public parades and festivals and the wearing of green attire or shamrocks.
Recently a professional ballet company called Ballet West visited Wilson Elementary to teach and perform for our students. They taught us different ballet terms, positions, dances, and other information about the world of dance and ballet. They performed sections of the Nutcracker ballet, and they wore elaborate costumes to enhance their performance. Thank you, Ballet West, for providing us with such a rich experience!
It's almost time for our last Parent Teacher Conference night of the school year! Please make some time to come to the school to visit with your child's teacher about how things in the classroom are going. This week some of Wilson's 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students participated in a "fun shot" basketball competition to see how many shots they could make in 1 minute from 5 different spots on the basketball court. The top 3 boys and girls from each grade got to go the Payson area competition the next night, where Kamika Wesley won 3rd place for the 4th grade boys and Emersea Beddoes won 2nd place for the 5th-6th grade girls! Recently, our school had our annual science fair for 5th and 6th grade students. The top 10 projects then moved on to the Nebo School District science fair. We are excited to announce that several of our students have moved on from the district science fair to the BYU science fair at the end of the month!
Recently the 4th grade classes spent some time learning a Virginia reel dance (an English folk dance) with Mrs. Holly Markgraf-Mayne. The students really enjoyed it and had a good time learning about that piece of history! Thanks once again to Ms. Holly for coming to help our students learn to enjoy dance and movement in all its forms.
Congratulations to Emily Sheets for being voted by the faculty here at Wilson as our school's teacher of the year! Emily is always working hard to help her 3rd graders, and she is beloved by all at Wilson School. She is certainly an example of how all teachers should be. Way to go, Miss Sheets!
